STREAM Projects
This year we have NO STEAM Reports!  We have added the "R" for Reading, and now have monthly STREAM Projects instead of the weekly STEAM reports.  Woo Hoo!  Mr. J believes this will be a better way to truly use all SIX areas of STREAM better, and be less "busy" work for students!  You will get a flyer detailing the first project based on our TMNT Ninja Turtle theme, and the Project will be due to Mr. J by FRIDAY AUGUST 29
Moby Max Update/ New Contest
This summer, returning geckos were challenged to see who spent the most time on Moby Max!  The top 3 individual winners will be announced on August 18th, and the class with the most participation (most students logging on and working) was Miss Gregory's class who will earn a TMNT pizza party!
Our first contest for this school year is based on NEW BADGES!  We are looking to see the students who can earn the most NEW badges from August 18th to September 22nd.  Remember you earn a NEW badge each time you get 50 questions answered correctly.  You can check you progress by clicking the BADGES tab in your Moby Max account.
TypingWeb First Contest
This year, Mr. Y found us a great new site that challenges your typing skills in unique ways.  This will be great learning for our new state test, The FSA, and we will be having monthly contests based on various elements from the website.
Our first contest will be MOST WPM (Words Per Minute).  When you log onto your Typing Web account you can practice your typing skills, play typing games, and then challenge yourself to the Typing Test!  You can take the test as many times as you wish, and each time it will let you know how many words per minute you can type.  We are looking for ONE STUDENT from each grade level (K- 6) who can type the MOST words per minute to win our first contest.  You will have until September 24 to see if you are the winner, so keep trying and typing!
NINJA TURTLE DAY
On August 29th we will be celebrating our first theme with a dress up day!   That day students will be encouraged to come to school in turtle/TMNT outfits or costumes!  It will be a fun way to end our first month/theme!
Dolphin Tale Field Trip
Our first field trip will be on Friday, September 19th to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium to visit Winter and Hope from the DOLPHIN TALE movies.  Permission slips were given out at the Open House and first day of school.  The cost for this trip is $22, and money and signed slips will be due by Friday August 29th, or before then if the trip fills up sooner, so get your forms in ASAP if you wish to attend.

STREAM project AUGUST 2014: TMNT

STREAM PROJECTS

This year, students will work on month long projects that reflect the current theme in all six areas of STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics)

Instead of last year's STEAM and weekly STEAM Reports, we now will have month long STREAM projects.
Students will see examples in school, and work on projects all month at home with their families,  then will collect them together to turn in on a given DUE DATE towards the end of the month.

K and grade 1 students may have parent help with the writing elements for the projects (grades 2-6 should write their own)

August's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle inspired STREAM project

ALL Projects DUE ON: FRIDAY, AUGUST 29th

(MUST FOLLOW SIX STEPS/AREAS)

1. Science

Make your own TMNT mutagen/ooze (aka Slime)

There are many versions/variations, check on youtube or our website msaslearninglabs.com then click STREAM projects link

2. Engineer

Make a container for your mutagen/ooze

You can make any container for your ooze, as long as it holds the ooze and does not leak (could be a canister or bag).

3. Tech

Label your container

Using any technology you have (computer made labels, sticker labels, duct tape, etc.)  make a label for your ooze.   Then, come up with a name for your mutagen/ooze (hand-write it or type it on the label)  Leave space on your label to add  steps 4 (Arts) and 5 (Math)

4. Arts

Draw a logo for your ooze

Create your own unique logo and draw it on your label.

5. Math

Measure how much mutagen/ooze fits in your container

Using a measuring cup, see how much ooze you can put in your container, add this data to your label .  Use customary measurements (fluid ounces)  & use this link to convert to metric units (liters) http://www.exploratorium.edu/cooking/convert/measurements.html

6. Read

Practice reading your label information and presenting it

You need to know what your label says before you present it to Mr. J.  Practice talking about your ooze using  your label you made, including the logo you drew, the math measurement you made,  & the title you gave your ooze.

TURN COMPLETED PROJECT INTO Mr.J by FRIDAY AUGUST 29 (Ninja Turtle Day!)
