S.T.E.A.M. Report Update and Recap of week
This week we began our new month theme “Despicable Me” starring Gru and the Minions! We will be learning two songs from the soundtracks in unique ways. We will learn the “Despicable Me” rap with the game JUST DANCE, and we will learn the song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams by using ASL: American Sign Language! In science we will be doing various mathematical and scientific games and experiments with Dr. Nafario and the minions. In Art, we will be adding “despicable” drawings into our STEAM notebooks
Here is a recap of your week to help you write your STEAM report for Week 23 (Due Tuesday April 8th for a part of your grade):
Tuesday April 1: Introduction to new Despicable theme, Made Minion Mats to hold our minions you earn with your minion points (Engineering), Played Minion Measurement using rulers to measure circular minion and moon items, older students used Pi to find circumference (Math)
Wednesday April 2: Began to rehearse our new songs listed above (Arts), Learned new sign language terms (Science), Decorated our first April Page with a Gru logo Mr. J taught us how to draw (Art/Engineering)
Thursday April 3rd: Had a SNEAK PEEK day of our May theme (MARVEL) with Captain America on the opening day of his new movie! Students used technology to help SHIELD battle Hydra and continued to learn about Pi, Measurement, and circumference using Captain America’s Shield!!
Friday Aprl 4th: Early release, Mock/Trial FCAT Day, No Learning Labs
Moby Max Test Prep Update
This month you are trying to FINISH (100%) BOTH Langauge and Math TEST PREP MODULES on MobyMax.com before you take your State Tests! 3rd-6th grade have until next Friday (April 11) to complete them. K-2nd grade have until May 2nd. You will get to go to a special post FCAT or SAT test party if you are finished by the deadline.
Remember each student should be working MORE THAN 60 minutes a week at home as well as at school on MobyMax. Check your child’s progress by logging in as a “Parent” to see how long they have been on the site and how well they are doing. Remember, as of April 4th students will need 25 badges or more to return to the Arts/Sciences Learning Labs!
Yearbook Cover Contest
ONE MORE DAY TO TURN IN YOUR ART!!! This month, students were asked to design the cover of this year’s yearbook. At home, they were to draw an illustration that they thought reflected our school and our themes we have studied this year. It could be a picture of our mascot the gecko, and have any elements form subject learned at school this year (Science, Math, Reading, Arts, etc.), and you may include elements from our Arts/Sciences themes (Cloudy 2, Famous artists and scientists with Mustaches, Hunger Games, Frozen, Star Wars, Lego, Muppets).
THE DUE DATE for ENTRIES IS TOMORROW! The illustration should be colorful and on 8 ½ x 11 paper. . Put your name on the back of your illustration and turn them into Mr. J or the front office by the April 4th deadline. The winner will have their picture as the cover of our yearbook and get a FREE Copy! The six runner up winners will have their artwork on the back cover.
Donations of supplies
The Learning Labs need more supplies for April. Look to see if you can bring in any of the following items. Each item will earn you a minion point in April =)
- Elmer’s glue ( always needed! LOL)
- Yellow paint
- Purple paint
- White paint
- Yellow construction or cardstock paper
- Purple construction or cardstock paper
- Transparent tape rolls
Pictures for the YEARBOOK!
Mr J is getting ready to start making this year’s yearbook. If you took any pictures or videos of any Field trip, Showcase or special school event, please email them to ArtsLearningLab@gmail.com and we will use them in the Yearbook!!

Saturday April 5- FREE MOVIE!! Little Mermaid on Siesta Key beach (as part of the Sarasota Film Festival)!
April 14- 25th FCAT Testing; Learning Lab schedule will be altered depending on testing days: No clubs or visitors
May 1- Start our MARVELous May theme with the Marvel heroes: Spiderman, X men, Captain America and more!
